Frequently Asked Questions

We answer the most common questions about taxes, ITIN, procedures and more.

View all questions
What is an ITIN and who can apply for one?

The ITIN is a tax identification number issued by the IRS. According to the IRS, you need one if you have a federal tax purpose and are not eligible for a Social Security number (SSN). An ITIN does not authorize you to work or change your immigration status. See the details at IRS.gov.

Can I file taxes if I don't have a Social Security number?

If you have a federal tax obligation and are not eligible for an SSN, the IRS says you may need an ITIN to file your return. Every case is different: check the current Form W-7 requirements at IRS.gov or consult an authorized preparer.

How can I find out where my refund is?

Use the IRS's official "Where's My Refund" tool. You will need your SSN or ITIN, your filing status, the tax year and the exact refund amount. This site does not look up your refund: go to IRS.gov.

How long does a tax refund take to arrive?

The IRS reports that it usually issues refunds in about 3 weeks if you filed electronically, and 6 weeks or more if you mailed a paper return. Some cases need additional review. Check the current timeframes at IRS.gov.

Do the simulators replace the official exam?

No. The simulators are educational practice material. The naturalization test is administered by USCIS and the driving test by your state's vehicle agency.

Is the information on this site tax advice?

No. It is informational and educational content. For your particular case, check official sources or an authorized professional.
