persona planificando un viaje con pasaporte y documentos sobre la mesa

There’s an October ritual many Hispanic families know well: someone starts looking at plane tickets to spend the holidays back home —Santo Domingo, San Salvador, Guadalajara— and suddenly comes the question that changes everything: “Are the kids’ passports still valid?” Asked in time, that question is the difference between a calm December and a last-minute race for an appointment at a passport agency.

The State Department publishes current processing times on its official website, and it’s worth reading them calmly before deciding: the numbers it announces don’t include the mail, and the mail can be half the wait.

How long each option takes

There are two speeds for applying for or renewing a passport from the United States:

  • Routine service: 4 to 6 weeks. The standard option and the most economical.
  • Expedited service: 2 to 3 weeks, with an additional $60 fee.

Those timeframes are processing only: what it takes a passport agency or center to review your application and documents. The mail is separate, and the State Department itself warns that your application can take up to 2 weeks to reach its offices, and the issued passport another 2 weeks to reach your door.

The honest math, then: routine service can take 8 to 10 weeks door to door. Expedited, about 6 to 7 weeks if you don’t pay for fast shipping. If your trip is in December, October isn’t “too early”: it’s just in time.

The fee hike that started October 1

Since October 1, 2026, the expedited return-delivery fee —the optional service that returns your issued passport in 1 to 3 days instead of regular mail— went from $23.36 to $26.87, an increase of $3.51.

Two clarifications to avoid confusion:

  • This fee does not speed up processing: it only shortens the return trip, once the passport has already been issued. What shortens processing is the $60 expedite.
  • It only applies to delivery addresses within the United States.

What it costs in total

For a first adult application: $130 for the passport book, plus a $35 acceptance fee at the facility where you submit your application. If you also choose expedited service ($60) and fast return delivery ($26.87), the full bill tops $250. Children under 16 have their own fees and must apply in person.

The most common mistake: paying for fast delivery thinking it speeds up processing

Many people pay the $26.87 for expedited return delivery thinking their passport will come out of processing faster. It doesn’t: that payment only changes how the passport travels back, from the issuance center to your home. If what you’re short on is processing time, the only option is the $60 expedite —or an agency appointment if the trip is less than 14 days away—. Paying for one without the other, when time is tight, is throwing money away.

When expedited service is worth it

The State Department’s rule of thumb: choose expedited if you travel in less than 6 weeks from when you mail your application; routine service only works for trips with more than 6 weeks of cushion. And if your international trip is 14 calendar days or fewer away, no mail-in option will work: that’s when you book an appointment at a passport agency, with proof of travel (tickets or itinerary) in hand.

The plan for the year-end holidays

If your plan is to fly in December, act this very week:

  • Check today the expiration date of every family member’s passport.
  • Watch out for the detail that ruins the most trips: many countries require the passport to be valid for at least 6 months after the travel date. A passport that “expires in March” may not work for traveling in December.
  • If the margin is tight, request expedited service ($60 extra) and consider fast return delivery ($26.87) to trim the final wait.
  • About two weeks after mailing your application, check its status in the official tracking portal.

What to do today, in order

  • Take out the whole family’s passports and note the expiration dates.
  • Compare those dates with your trip and with the destination country’s validity requirement.
  • If the margin is tight, request expedited service and fast return delivery.
  • If you travel within 14 days, book an appointment at a passport agency with your proof of travel.
  • Before mailing your application, check the current times on the official website: they change with demand.
